Building a barndominium in Akron
We build barndominiums for Akron households who have outgrown a city lot: turnkey barndominiums handed over ready to live in, barndominium kits for owner-builders who want to take on part of the work, pole barn homes on post-frame, and shouses that put a workshop, equipment bay or RV garage under the same roofline as the house. Many of our Akron clients work in the city or along I-77 and I-76 and want land within a reasonable drive, so we start from the parcel and its commute, then fit the building to it.
Akron is built out, and so is most of Summit County around it: the 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 413 farms on about 15,000 acres, roughly 6% of the county's land. The acreage Akron buyers find is south-west of the city. Medina County, across the western line, has the rural townships closest to Akron's west side and runs its own certified residential building department. Further south-west, Wayne County around Wooster is farm country, with more than 2,000 farms and, outside Chippewa Township, no zoning in its unincorporated areas. Buyers heading east toward Portage County are covered on our Cuyahoga Falls page.
As barndominium builders working this south-west route, we help you check a lot before you commit: whether the county or a village department will review the plans, where a septic system can go and pass the health district's soil evaluation, whether a well is needed, and what the township allows for a large attached shop. Send us a Medina or Wayne County address, or a listing you are considering, and we will quote the build on that ground.

The statewide rules, in brief
- Ohio has one statewide residential code, the Residential Code of Ohio, adopted by the Board of Building Standards.
- The Residential Code of Ohio sets a 115 mph design wind speed statewide. Frost-line depth and ground snow load are left to the local jurisdiction, so we design to the figures published where your land is.
- Whether your build is plan-reviewed and inspected depends on whether a building department certified by the Board for residential work covers your land. We confirm which one does before anything is drawn.
- A barndominium that people live in is a dwelling, not a farm building. In our reading, the agricultural exemption covers barns, not homes.
